Google's customizable Gemini chatbots arrive in Docs, Sheets, and Gmail.
After having previously been restricted to the Gemini application.
Google has implemented a new feature for Workspace users that allows access to "Gems," customizable versions of its artificial intelligence assistant, Gemini. These Gems are designed to specialize in specific tasks and can be used directly from the side panel of applications like Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drive, and Gmail, eliminating the need to switch between different applications.
According to the company, this innovation allows users to maximize the customized use of the Gemini assistant, making work easier by minimizing the repetitive process of entering commands. Gemini users can create versions of this chatbot that focus on specific tasks they frequently perform, such as writing texts tailored to their brand or reviewing materials for exams. Additionally, they have the option to upload their own files to the Gems, providing them with context and specific resources for their tasks. Google also offers predefined Gems for various activities, such as text editing, coding, and generating ideas for sales presentations.
Some examples of how Workspace users can take advantage of Gems include:
- Using a writing Gem to generate content tailored to a target audience.
- Creating a Gem that supports sales interactions based on relevant information about a company, prospect, or specific industry.
- Employing a customized "assistant Gem" for the user's job role to provide more relevant summaries and content for internal communications.
- Using a Gem designed to evaluate content from the perspective of a particular professional profile (such as a CEO) to help formulate more engaging messages.
Previously, Gems were only available through the Gemini app. While it's not possible to create custom Gems directly within Workspace applications, users can do so from gemini.google.com/gems/create or by selecting the "Create a new Gem" option in the Workspace side panel. The capabilities of this environment, such as mentioning other users or accessing files and folders, are compatible with both custom and predefined Gems.
The update for Gems is now available to all Google Workspace users with access to Gemini in the Workspace applications' side panel. The rollout began on July 2, and Google indicates that it may take "more than 15 days" to be active for all users.
