Nintendo seems to confirm that the GameCube controller for Switch 2 is only compatible with GameCube games.
It's in the fine print.
It has been revealed that the new GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 appears to be compatible only with the GameCube games available in the Online Classics library. In a small text that appears at the end of the controller's trailer, it is mentioned: "The controller is compatible only with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics," suggesting that it will not work with other titles on the Switch 2.
After months of speculation, the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation showcased the new controller alongside a collection of GameCube games that will be available with the console's launch, scheduled for June 5, 2025. Among the highlighted games are iconic titles such as Wind Waker and Soul Caliber 2. However, those who were hoping to use the new controller for recent games like Mario Kart World or Donkey Kong Bananza will be disappointed, as this will not be possible.
Although historically, Nintendo's retro controllers have been designed to play specific titles within their own Switch Online library, some, like those for NES, SNES, and N64, have allowed gameplay for other Switch games as well. However, their button configuration may pose a limitation.
Nintendo has issued similar warnings in the past regarding other retro controllers, such as the SNES controller, which ultimately turned out to be compatible with additional Switch games. It remains to be seen if the same case applies to the GameCube controller when it launches this summer.
As for the price, it has been set at $449.99 / £395.99 or $499.99 / £429.99 for a Mario Kart World bundle. Currently, pre-orders are available in the UK, while those for the US and Canada have been delayed as Nintendo evaluates the potential impact of tariffs imposed during the Trump administration.
